Every year, Polar Research and Policy Initiative (PRPI) joins the University of Southern Denmark to convene a cohort of 20-40 of the world’s leading Arctic tourism researchers, industry executives and policymakers for an international workshop on Sustainable Arctic Tourism at different locations in the Arctic. Our institutional partners include the University of the Arctic, Nordregio (Nordic Council of Ministers) and the Danish Ministry of Higher Education and Science.
In 2018, we hosted the workshop in northern Norway, on board a Hurtigruten vessel sailing from Tromso to Honningsvag and back, followed by a high-level policy dialogue at the University of Tromso. In 2019, we convened the workshop in northern Iceland from 18-22 March. The workshop was held in Akureyri, Husavik, Siglufjörður and Reykjavik. The workshop this year concluded with a high-level dialogue hosted in the Parliament of Iceland, followed by a networking reception co-hosted with the Ambassador of Canada to Iceland.
The Parliamentary dialogue and networking reception brought together the workshop participants and over 10 Icelandic MPs, as well as Ministers/Ambassadors/Consuls-General/senior officials of Iceland, Greenland, Denmark, Canada, the UK, the US, India and France. Further details about participants and the workshop proceedings will be published in due course.
