Domagoj Baresic of Polar Research and Policy Initiative (PRPI) will participate in the Conference of the Transatlantic Maritime Emissions Research Network (TRAMEREN).
The International Conference on Maritime Actors and Climate Change: Incentives and Strategies for Voluntary Action is organized by TRAMEREN, a joint research venture between the Center for Enterprise Liability (CEVIA), Faculty of Law, University of Copenhagen and the Frank Guarini Center, School of Law, New York University. Researchers from TRAMEREN, and other invited expert participants will convene for a two-day conference at the University of Copenhagen in June.
A comprehensive international legal framework for controlling maritime greenhouse gas emissions has proven a challenging task for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the International Maritime Organization, leaving the sector unregulated to date. Therefore, decentralized initiatives involving a limited number of governments and/or private actors may offer a promising alternative approach. However, these potential opportunities to make incremental progress are underexplored. The Conference aims to examine these innovative approaches for incentivizing maritime emissions controls, paying attention to the fragmented legal architecture governing the sector.
