Since its inception, Polar Research and Policy Initiative (PRPI) has been committed to promoting greater understanding of the Arctic within the spheres of policy, industry, civil society, media and the general public through more accurate and more nuanced media coverage of the region. It has done so by publishing fact-checked content through its own publishing platform The Polar Connection, the world’s largest platform for Arctic analysis and commentary, as well as its media partners, which include some of the most prolific regional news outlets across the Arctic as well as widely known and trusted international news outlets. It has also done so by supporting the entire gamut of actors across the regional and international media landscape with resources and services geared towards improving the quality of their reporting, from resources such as expert quotes, analysis, statistics, maps and graphics, to media briefing and fact-checking services aimed at addressing misperceptions and misrepresentations, and countering misinformation, disinformation and fake news.

We are pleased to announce that we are now able to scale up our work in this regard, thanks to financial support by the European Media and Information Fund (EMIF) managed by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. Our project ‘Fact-Checking to Improve Media Coverage of the Arctic in Europe’ was one of the 8 projects (in 6 countries) approved by EMIF in September 2022 and enables us to bring together publishers, editors and reporters, subject matter experts, fact checkers, researchers, and Indigenous and Northern voices more strategically to improve media reporting about the Arctic, climate and the environment, and Indigenous issues more effectively. Apart from producing, and supporting the production of, fact-checked content about the Arctic and related issues, the support by EMIF also enables PRPI to provide fact-checking and media briefing services to regional and international media outlets in a more sustained fashion, organise virtual and in-person seminars, and set up a media hotline for editors and reporters seeking to fact-check news stories, verify details or request analysis prior to the publication of articles.

This project is supported by the European Media and Information Fund (EMIF) managed by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. The Fund is established by the European University Institute and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
